Luxury Vinyl Tile

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) is currently the fastest-growing flooring product in the world. We’re revealing the secrets behind the surging popularity of LVT, and sharing four factors that make it a top flooring choice for your next project.

1) AESTHETICS

While luxury vinyl tile flooring is available in many different design options, wood-style tiles are one of the most popular choices. These allow designers to create a similar aesthetic to real wood flooring, but with a lower purchase price, installation cost and less costly and complex ongoing maintenance requirements than real wood – meaning LVT is much more accessible for projects with smaller budgets.

Additionally, LVT is available in many other designs, including stone and abstract patterns. This makes it a very versatile hard floor covering that will fit in with a range of design aesthetics.

2) DURABILITY

One of the other major selling points of LVT is that it’s very durable and long-lasting. The secret to this durability lies in the construction of LVT. It is made up of several distinct layers:

  • Vinyl backing
  • Vinyl core
  • Print film layer
  • Protective clear layer known as the ‘wear layer,’ and finished with a polyurethane coating which is sometimes re-enforced with ceramic bead, glass/crystal bead or aluminum oxide.

The wear layer is what makes LVT so durable: it covers the print layer, protecting it from scuffs and scratches, and any other routine wear and tear.

Other types of hard flooring, such as real wood or vinyl composite tiles, are protected against wear and tear through extensive maintenance: regular waxing, polishing and sealing is required to create a layer that protects the floor surface against wear and tear.

LVT has that protective layer built-in, meaning it offers much more comprehensive and long-lasting protection against damage out of the box – so it’s less likely to scuff, indent or scratch if you move heavy furniture around, or drop things on it.

3) EASE OF MAINTENANCE

Thanks to the hard-working and waterproof wear layer, LVT is also much easier to clean and maintain than other types of hard flooring, making it a popular flooring choice for companies with tight maintenance budgets.

Vinyl composite tiles (an alternative vinyl flooring option) require regular waxing and sealing to protect the tiles against dirt and damage – on top of regular cleaning and maintenance. In contrast, LVT only requires regular sweeping and mopping to remove dust and dirt.

4) ACOUSTICS

Health and wellness is becoming a growing priority for business owners, with companies working hard to create commercial spaces that look after the health and wellbeing of the people that use those spaces every day.

Studies have linked elevated noise levels with increased stress, meaning that many companies avoid using hard surface flooring – particularly in open plan offices – as it contributes to elevated noise levels. However, LVT has an acoustic profile that’s much lower than other hard flooring types: it’s quieter underfoot, and has a lower reverberation rate than real wood, laminate or VCT flooring.

Companies can now achieve the same aesthetic of other hard flooring types, without negatively affecting the indoor working environment for their employees.
