Elements of a Great Home Office
You’ve settled into your new “work from home routine” and things are going fairly well. And while officing from home can have its perks, are you finding your make-shift desk set-up is keeping you from being as productive as you would like to be? I thought so! As a remedy, I’m sharing some elements of a great home office space you may considering trying.
The key here is to own that you deserve a great space to work in, whether at home or at the corporate space. With the right space your stress levels will be reduced while your productivity will improve. Also, by more clearly defining and designing that workspace you’ll find a clearer line between being at work and not.
Elements of a Sustainable Office
When we reference sustainable in this context, we are talking specifically about sustainability from the human experience side. This is how PureAlchemy Design approaches all its office design and your home office is no different. Make sure that your offices spaces addresses the six elements of The PureAlchemy Lens.
Acoustics: Excess noise has been repeatedly tied to reduced cognitive performance. If your office space is experiencing negative acoustic affects, it may be time to consider altering the sound environment of your workplace.
Lighting: Studies indicate that a well-lit workplace is essential for optimizing performance. In fact, over the last two decades, science has reliably demonstrated that light has a positive impact on health and wellbeing no matter your industry.
Layout: People require workplace solutions that facilitate the flow of information and ideas.
Visual Interest: Humans are complex, and a bland homogenous environment hinders creativity, productivity, and health. Studies show that color influence people universally, making the addition of color to a space the ideal visual enhancement for maximum performance.
Daylight & Nature: Use of daylight in an office helps people regulate circadian rhythms which is a natural way to reduce stress in the workday. We also naturally boost mood and energy by maximizing our exposure to daylight.
Activity & Ergonomics: Workplaces that are designed for and around people are more likely to be comfortable, flexible, and support productivity over time. By modifying our work environment, we can make crucial changes for our health.
Start With Your Desk
There are a lot of options in the world of desks, so it is important to make a good choice. Consider your work style as you research your desk solution and focus on ergonomics as much as you can. If you are at the computer the entire day it would be wise to consider a height adjustable desk. (My clients say it changes their world!) If you are up and on the go frequently that piece may not be as important but always look into acquiring an ergonomic chair. Your body will thank you and your workday will be far less fatiguing.
