Space Type

Boutique retail — relocation and full design of a new storefront

Scope

Complete design of a relocated boutique — a “remember-your-name” shop that needed its soul to travel with it. Included a refinished lattice canopy from the existing open deck, tuned LED lighting for true garment color and flattering skin tones, an inclusive fitting lounge, a hospitality nook for trunk shows and events, quick-change mobile fixtures, and a calm material palette that lets color and people shine.

THE SPACE BEFORE

Judith McGrann & Friends wasn’t starting from scratch — it was starting over. The boutique had a loyal following, the kind of place where the owner knows your name and your style. But a relocation meant a new space with none of that built-in warmth. The new storefront had challenges: street-front glare competing with a deeper interior, an existing open deck that had to stay (no new ceiling), compact back-of-house, and the kind of focused budget that makes every decision count. The question wasn’t just how to design a shop. It was how to carry a feeling into a space that didn’t have one yet.

THE DESIGN DIRECTION

The goal was layered: a welcome that feels intuitive on first look and invites lingering. Identity without excess. Accurate color and flattering light — because in a clothing boutique, how things look under the lights is everything. A hospitality moment that extends beyond the sales floor. The ability to flip the space from browsing to trunk shows in minutes. And all of it within a calm envelope where the merchandise and the people wearing it are always the stars. This isn’t a big-box retail fit-out. It’s a space designed around the way one owner knows and serves her customers.

WHAT WE WORKED WITH (AND AROUND)

A lattice canopy that stitches the room together. The existing open deck couldn’t be replaced — no new ceiling was in the budget, and the open plenum required coordination with lighting, sprinklers, and acoustics. We refinished it as a warm, diagonal lattice canopy that became the signature element of the entire space. It’s the first thing you notice overhead, and it quietly connects every zone in the shop. High-impact identity from a lean, resourceful move.

Light tuned for people and for color. In a boutique, lighting isn’t ambiance — it’s the design tool that makes or breaks a sale. We installed warm-white LEDs tuned to the cadence of the canopy, layering ambient light with pinpoint accents. The result: true garment color so customers see exactly what they’re buying, flattering skin tones in every mirror, comfortable brightness without glare, and subtle wayfinding that guides visitors through the space without them noticing. Street-front glare from the storefront was a real challenge — the stacked sightlines and quiet perimeter palette help guests orient at a glance, even with the sun pouring in.

A calm backdrop that lets joy lead. The boutique’s clientele is expressive and colorful — the space needed to celebrate that without competing. We built a quiet neutral palette of warm wood and brass as the envelope, then introduced vibrant color through lounge furniture and the merchandise itself. The design recedes so the people and the product advance. Focused illumination keeps visual harmony while letting personal expression take center stage.

Through the arch — hospitality lives beyond the sales floor. Trunk shows and private events are part of this boutique’s identity. We created an arched threshold that signals a transition from retail into a small hospitality nook — a pass-through and petite kitchenette that support toasts and gatherings by night and fold back into effortless retail by day. The selling floor doesn’t shrink to make room for events. The events have their own gracious corner.

An affirming fitting lounge. Fitting rooms can be the most stressful part of a shopping trip — or the most empowering. We designed for the second. Soft, even luminance so nothing looks harsh. Privacy curtains. Companion seating so a friend or family member can be part of the moment. Generous turning zones that accommodate varied ages, sizes, and abilities. The fitting lounge feels less like a changing room and more like a personal styling session.

Quick-change retail. The space shifts from daily browsing to a hosted event — and back — in minutes. Lightweight, mobile fixtures and preset lighting scenes make fast resets possible while keeping travel widths clear and accessible. It’s the kind of flexibility that lets a small boutique punch well above its weight.

THE OUTCOME

Walk into Judith McGrann & Friends and the space reads in a heartbeat. The lattice canopy draws your eye up. The lighting makes the colors sing. The quiet palette wraps around you while the merchandise and the people in the room bring all the energy. It feels like home — which is exactly what a remember-your-name boutique should feel like.

Guests orient naturally, see true color under lights designed for clothes and skin, and feel the boutique’s joyful energy without being overwhelmed by the design. The fitting lounge makes trying things on feel good. The hospitality nook means the shop can host a trunk show one evening and open for browsing the next morning without skipping a beat. And the lattice canopy — the move that cost the least and delivers the most — gives the space a signature that guests carry with them long after they leave.
